#T5W is back with Hidden Gems

Hello there!  Yes, I've finally decided to get back into Top 5 Wednesday.  This week we are exploring Hidden Gems.  Your favourite books in your favourite genre that don't get a lot of hype.

Now some of these books I have never seen on BookTube, while others make a rare appearance, but they all have one thing in common - they are all some of my favourite Urban Fantasy series.  I've put the book synopsis down below for your convenience.  So without further ado, here are my Top 5 Favourite Urban Fantasy Hidden Gems

Hello fuds and duds!

Finally got my reading groove back.  It's been a while since I've been able to pick up a book and read more than about a page, but Agatha Christie has pulled me out of my funk.  I had fun reading Death on the Nile and Evil Under the Sun (loved that Death on the Nile is directly referenced in Evil Under the Sun).  Needed a little more Christie, so I picked up Black Coffee.  Although it's a novelization of her play, Black Coffee, I forgot that fact and enjoyed the locked room whodunit.

Bookmail, as always, trickled in.  Only four items this week - but I had a problem with one.  Still, the other three were amazing, so I'll call this a win.  Still waiting on late parcels - The Tommyknockers hardcover will get here one of these weeks - and I'm now switching my attention to completing my Discworld Library as those amazing clothbound hardcovers are soooo beautiful.  Four new titles are available in October, I think?, so I'm steadily buying any books I'm missing.

So that just leaves my reading plans for this week.  In honour of the A Discovery of Witches casting announcement the other day, I'm picking up A Discovery of Witches and Shadow of Night (my favourite!) for their yearly reread.  They are waiting on my bedside table, and I am planning on diving into them tonight.  

Then, if I manage to finish those two books, I have book one in the Dark Heavens series by Kylie Chan standing by.  White Tiger is such a fun read.  It's one of the few books where I have actually been to one of the places the characters visit!

Anyway, that's all from me for the moment.  Need to get my butt in gear and do a little tidying up around the house as I have electricians coming over on Tuesday to do a lot of work....

I have loved this book ever since I first read it way back in 2006. I was drawn to the cover while perusing my local bookstore one day. I picked it up, read the back, and told myself if it was there next time I'd buy it. Well, weeks later it was still there, so I bought it - and had finished it by the time I went to bed that night. It's amazing how we can remember some books so clearly. That first reading, how we felt, the excitement, the highs and lows as we follow the characters through their story. White Tiger is one of those books for me.

The protagonist Emma was an Australian. How many of those do you get? She was loyal, fierce, loving and intelligent. I could hear her voice in my head - no accent adjustment required ;-D I have lived on the Gold Coast, where her character finds herself at one stage, I know the beach, I could smell the sea, feel the beautiful white gold sand under my feet - even felt twinges when Leo got the sunburn of all sunburns. I've been there, done that.

Mixing a modern Aussie girl's adventures in Hong Kong with the Eastern Mythology was just the icing on the cake for me. It opened up so much more than just a contemporary romance could have managed - and made a richer palette from which to draw from. Xuan Wu is wonderful, and his daughter Simone is just so adorable. Leo is a mountain of a man with whom Emma has an almost brotherly relationship with, and don't get me started on Kitty Kwok.

White Tiger is a great first book (in what I originally thought was just a trilogy!), and it is so easy to let yourself just get swept away in the story.

Only negative I have is that none of the books in the series are available on audiobook, but hopefully that will change in the future.

T5W || Books You Read in One Sitting

Welcome to another Top 5 Wednesday!  This week we had to find out 5 favourite books that we read in one sitting - and let me tell you, as someone who usually does read all their books in one sitting, it was hard.

I went through my shelves, and finally decided not to go with the biggest, or most impressive books, but the ones that I enjoyed the most.  Turns out that I really enjoy Urban Fantasy/Fantasy books as only one of my books didn't contain a fantasy/paranormal element.  Huh, guess I should have included a classic for diversity's sake, but these were my most enjoyable reads.

T5W || Favourite Books of the Year... So Far

Sorry this post is going to be super short - as well as super late.  I'd hoped to get it up on Friday, but the internet was not talking to me (and Photoshop has been playing up).  What are you gonna do?

This week we are listing the top 5 books that we've read so far this year.  I'd love to be able to add some of the gorgeous hardcovers I've been accumulating, but I just haven't gotten around to reading many of them yet.  Perhaps I'll be able to add them for my favourite books of the year.

T5W || Debut Novels

Hello Gals and Pals ;-D

This weeks topic is Debut Novels.  

While most first novels are published without a ripple in the literary world, there are some that cause a tidal wave of hype.  This can simple be for the content.  Is it risqué?  Very violent, too taboo, heartbreaking or poignant?  Will we wet out pants laughing?  Is it the best kids book out since Harry Potter?  Or perhaps word has gotten out about their style of writing.  Is it lyrical?  Free-form?  Are they the next Jane Austen, Bronte, Hemingway or Steinbeck?

Whatever the reason - "Congratulations!" you have bought this debut novel and supported an author ;-D

Now after that small little rant, or was it a rave?... thing, I'd better get to the point and show you my top 5 choices for debut novel.  So without further ado, here they are;

Out of all the books I could have chosen, I thought that these were a broad representation of my bookshelves.   As you can see there are fantasy, urban fantasy, children's (fantasy) literature as well as a modern (fantasy) classic.  Hmmm, I'm sensing a theme here... ;-D

Sorry to keep it so short and to the point this week.  I just couldn't make up my mind as to which of my hundreds of books I'd save {more like which authors book's I'd save instead!}.

Top 5 Wednesday - Books you didn't think you'd like

Just a really quick post to answer the T4W question for this week. . .

"what were the books that you didn't think you'd like?"

Okay, here we go - and in no particular order

Gladiatrix by Rhonda Roberts (AUS author)

Although it sounded great (and I love the cover) I was just so hesitant about buying this book.  I kept putting it back on the shelves and after about 5 weeks of looking at it I just decided to buy it and take the risk.  Thankfully it was great, and I've now read the following 2 books in the Kannon Dupree: Timestalker series.

 

Three to Get Deadly by Janet Evanovich

This is the first book I read in the series, and I never used to read 'chick-lit', or contemporary books.  However I really needed something to take with me to work as I'd forgotten my book, so the cover looked quirky and a book about a bumbling bounty hunter sounded interesting.  Loved it, and now have all the books in the series, as well as the Diesel and Lizzie books.

Naked in Death by J.D. Robb

Out of all the books in this list I'd say that this was the one I was most dubious about.  I'd read Nora Roberts books, but I was never much of a police/detective story-goer.  My mum on the other hand loved this series (I think only 8 books had been published then) and I was really hesitant about reading a book that my mum thought was great.  I 'borrowed' it from her bookshelf one afternoon and darned if she wasn't right.  I loved it.  I then started to buy my own copies so I wouldn't have to keep borrowing hers.  Book 40 is due out next year, and I still enjoy the series ;-D

A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness

Like Stephanie Plum, I was a tad hesitant to get this book.  I had no idea that it was part of a trilogy - and although I usually like all things paranormal and fantasy - I just wasn't sure about this book.  I ended up caving after a few weeks of staring at it on the shelves (and because it was the second last copy on the shelves) and when I got home I was nearly going to put it on my TBR bookshelf, but something made me just dive right in.  I loved it, and couldn't believe that I'd almost self-sabotagued myself into missing out on such an interesting book/trilogy.

White Tiger by Kylie Chan (AUS author)

Another along the lines of ADoW (above) where I found the concept interesting, but just was so hesitant about buying it.  I bought this book a few weeks after it was first published, but had no one to either recommend or discourage me from picking it up.  Once I'd read it, I fell in love with the main characters, and couldn't wait to read the rest of what I thought was a trilogy.  Turns out it is now a trilogy of trilogies, and book 8 was released a few months ago.  Can't wait to get my hands on the paperback binding and look foward to the ninth - and final - book in the Dark Heavens saga.

Review - Dark Serpent

I have been waiting on pins and needles for this book, for we finally find out exactly what Emma is!  There is so much I can't say because to go into all my favourite scenes will give away some good surprises.  What I can tell you is that if you have read the previous six books, then Dark Serpent is an absolute MUST!

"I've vowed to Raise Emma and marry her 

and that is all I want from life".

The story picks up what seems like years after book six, but I doubt it's that long ;-D  Emma is in her 40's now, and is still under the punishment that the Celestial handed down at the end of Heaven to Wudang.  No one can refer to her as 'my Lady', etc., nor can they talk to her about Celestial matters.  Quite hard for Emma as she was running the Northern Heavens for all those years that Xuan Wu was absent, but they're all handling it.

Emma gets into trouble again in this book, but this time the consequences are devastating **keep the tissue's handy** and all I will say is that George (our loathsome Demon King) has his hand in it.  There, enough said.  However, we do find out what George's interest is in Emma in particular, and what the appearance of the Western Shen, and East/West Hybrids have to do with George.

I motored through this book.  I just couldn't wait to find out what had happened to Emma and her celestial family.  However, now I have to wait another 18 months or so until I find out what happens next.... darn it ;-D  There was only one small issue I had with Dark Serpent, and that was the change in voices.  From the beginning we have been following Emma, and listening to things from her POV.  However, in Dark Serpent, Ms Chan has decided to add a new voice to the mix.  I was surprised to find myself following Xuan Wu and although novel, the change in POV jolted me out of the groove at times.  Personally, I preferred to see things through Emma's eyes.  But, even though I have had a quick gripe about that, don't let it put you off what is a fabulous book.

If you haven't yet read the series, then you need to start with White Tiger and work your way through the two preceding trilogies.  I would love for you to be able to just pick up this great book, but you do need know whats happened to appreciate, and get the most out of, Dark Serpent.

Dark Serpent now on shelves

Yes, that's right.  The first book of the final trilogy is now available!  Dark Serpent, by Kylie Chan, continues the somewhat epic love story about our star crossed lovers Emma Donahue and the Dark Lord, Xuan Wu.

I've been following this series since I first saw the cover of White Tiger on the shelf at Bookworld - many years ago now - not long after it was first released.  There is something compelling about this twist on a mythology based story, and I have been waiting on tender hooks for all these years to finally find out exactly who, or what, Emma finally is!

My only negative is that the book has been released in trade format.  With the other books on my shelves in mass market format I don't like to have all different sizes in the one series.  So I'll be reserving my copy from the library and waiting for the smaller edition.

So until then I'm hoping to avoid all reviews - and resisting the temptation to peek!

Final Trilogy named!

Yes!  It's official.  Kylie Chan has released the details of the final trilogy to her very engaging and fabulous contemporary Chinese mythology series.

The final trilogy is the Celestial Battle Trilogy, with Book One: Glass Citadel picking up right after the events of Heaven to Wudang.

I have been faithfully buying these books since White Tiger was first released and though it will be sad to see them go - I can't wait to get my hands on Book 7, Glass Citadel, which according to Ms. Chan's website may be in stores in Australia as soon as September 2012.

The working titles for the final trilogy have been posted on her FAQ page, but so far they are listed as:

• Glass Citadel
• Mountain Fortress
• Celestial Palace

Remember, these may not be the titles the books are published under, so you'll have to double check before it's time to order them.  As far as I know there is no cover art available yet, but I'll post an image as soon as it is released.

Lindskold does it again!

Hi there.  I've been a tad remiss lately in regards to adding great reads to this blog, but I hope to fix that today.

I found this first book, Thirteen Orphans, at my new local library.  Like Kylie Chan, Jane Lindskold has mixed Eastern mythology with Western contemporary and come up with a winning combination.

Set in America, you follow the story of 19 year old Brenda Morris, who has just discovered her supernatural heritage.  Unlike Chan's series, Lindskold sets her story around the Chinese zodiac.  The descendants of the banished Earthly Branches are being picked off one by one by someone who knows their secrets.

Without getting into the details, Brenda and some other new initiates have to help stop the bad guys (well, a hot girl, her father and her lover) from stealing the power and memories of the other members of the zodiac.

Now, I can't really tell you about the next two books here as it'll give away what happens in this book, but rest assured, the next book, Nine Gates, starts soon after the climax of 13 Orphans.

If you love Kylie Chan, or the Firekeeper series then you'll love these books too.

It's nearly here!

I can't believe it's nearly time to order in the new Kylie Chan book!  I have been reading this series since it first hit the shelves.  Although set in modern day Hong Kong (mostly), they delve into the world of Eastern mythology so realisticly that you don't even question why centuries old demons are using mobile phones ;-D

The latest offering, Heaven to Wudang,  is the last book in the second trilogy - confusing I know - and will hit Australian and New Zealand shelves on 1 June 2011.

Ancient Chinese mythology comes to life in this bestselling series of martial arts and demons,

dragons and gods, legends and lies ... and a journey to the depths of Hell.

 

The demons that could control stones and elementals have been defeated, but the most powerful of Simon Wong′s associates still remains -- the one who can create almost undetectable copies of humans and Shen. This is not the last book in the series ladies and gentlemen.  This is only the conclusion of the 2nd trilogy and yep, you guessed it.  There is one more trilogy to go!

Heaven to Wudang

Just found out recently that the final book in the Journey to Wudang trilogy, Heaven to Wudang, is out this June.  {skipping around desk... doin' a little Shen dance}  I love this series.  Kylie Chan has done a fabulous job of weaving Chinese mythology into a contemporary setting.  I got lost in the story, and didn't find it odd at all that this celestial world existed underneath the everyday.

Emma Donahoe is a Aussie ex-pat working in Hong Kong when she takes a full time nanny position for the mega rich Mr. John Chen.  She loves his little girl Simone, and gets along great with the bodyguard Leo.  But things keep happening that cause her to get suspicious.  Emma's nobody's fool, and in the end unearths the big secret surrounding the Chen household.  It takes most of book one for Emma to be let in on the secret, but the pace of the book doesn't suffer for this wait.  The backstory is built up nicely, and you need to know this for Emma's early interactions with those in Hong Kong come back into play in later books.

While this is the final book in the trilogy, it has been confirmed that there is a final trilogy to come.  Yes... three more books of Xuan Wu and Emma.  I hope that we see more of Xuan Wu in this final book.  For those who have already read the books, the ending of Hell to Heaven left me wondering why Xuan Wu didn't just locate Emma with his celestial spidey senses.  Hopefully that will be explained in the new book.  I didn't want to give away anything for those of you who haven't read it yet so sorry about the cryptic wording.

In regards to the new book, I don't know if Kylie will be doing any book signings north of Brisbane yet, but will keep fingers crossed.  I can't put a pic of the dust jacket up yet as they haven't released the artwork yet, but as soon as I find a pic I'll shove it up here.

At the moment, there are no audiobooks of this series that I could locate, but I would love to get one if they ever release it.  Not sure who you'd have reading it, but an Aussie is a must.

Still out in the cold...

Well, it's been over 2 weeks since I took my computer in to the repair guy.  My hard drive was definitely DOA and had to be replaced.  Okay, fine... but they didn't install the drivers properly, so it kept cutting out and was unable to connect to the internet (darn dial-up is all we can get here) and back it went to have them reinstalled.  A few days later, I went into town and picked it up.  Got home, connected everything booted it up and went to get online and ... drumroll please.......nothing!  Everything else was fine, except for no modem dial-tone.  (grrrrrrr!)

So I called them, they said it was an ISP problem - probably, and to contact them.  So I did.  They were extremely helpful, and very nice, but after re-installing a dial-up connection and not having it work, they said to contact the repair place again and actually get them to test the modem after reinstalling the drivers (in front of me) that way everyone would be satisfied that they were working.  But guess what?  They didn't think they could do that. Bugger.

I mean who has a repair business that specialises in computers, but doesn't even check to make sure the repairs work?!  So until I take it back I'm left with my cousins laptop {mentally kissing their feet} so that I can at least access emails and work on my assignments.  Yeah, this was a good time to have my modem throw a mid-life crisis tantrum wasn't it.

On the other front, since I've had NO computer to play with, I've been getting a lot more reading done.  A good chunk is for my next two units, but I have managed to read the latest Kylie Chan book, Hell to Heaven.  It was fantastic!  I love the mixing of contemporary Hong Kong with ancient gods and demons.  If you haven't read it I would definitely recommend this for people who like a little twist with their paranormal story.  This is the 2nd book of the 2nd trilogy.  Hopefully the 3rd book will be out late December, early Jan 2011.

Lazy Dayz

I'm having a lazy day today.  Yesterday was a nightmare at the shopping centre.  I spent too much on clothes that I didn't really need... but they were soooo cute, and there were rude people and screaming children everywhere.

So today, I'm going to just lounge around, read a book, maybe play a little bit of AOM (Age of Mythology) and then check out our local deposit library.  Fingers crossed that my parcel is going to be in today's post.  I've been waiting for ages for them.  Still have about 3 or 4 left, but after waiting 2 weeks for them I no longer stalk the postie to see if he puts something in the mailbox :P

I'm going to finish my work on the computer, make up a batch of chilli-con carne and then settle down with either my Kylie Chan series, or start re-reading JD Robb so that when Fantasy in Death hits the shelves, then I'll be up to date.

Thought that I'd add a little pic of my cat.  She's such a pain in the butt about being outside.  Because of all the wildlife around our house, our cats are strictly indoors, unless on their leases.  Yes, you read it right, leashes.  They have an enclosed courtyard to mooch in, but leave a door open accidentally, and this little grey ghost is out the door like a shot, and the rolls around on the bricks outside the back door.  She strops herself along the bricks.  It's kinda cute, but trying to catch her later is not so cute.  It's a good thing that she's a total lap cat :)

I Found It! Earth to Hell is here

I can't believe that after nearly 18 months of waiting, and waiting, and waiting, that I only found Earth to Hell (Book 4) by total accident!  Here's what happened.... I'd been out shopping with my mother, and we'd been cruising through Big W - as you do, and we had decided to meet in the book section.  I was just browsing the shelves and had just about lost interest, when there, on the top shelf, was the book.  It's been soooo long in the works that I'd completely forgotten to check the author's website to find out when it was being released.  So I snapped it up (2nd last copy to :P) and proceeded directly home.  Do not stop, do not collect $200.

I got myself comfy in a little nest... drink... check, nibblies... check.  Now, when I opened up the book I realised something.  It had been so long since I'd read the darn series that I wasn't making instant connections to the names printed.  So I had to down tools, drag out the first trilogy and re-read them.  Not a chore, since as the character were being refreshed in my mind I just sailed into the 4th book, et voila, finis.

Earth to Hell picks up 8 years after Blue Dragon.  Emma Donahoe is now nearing 40, still as scruffy as ever, and is trying her best to look after the Northern Heavens for her love.  Simone is now 16, and a powerful creature.  She and Emma are holding on until Xuan Wu pulls himself together and comes back to them.  But the Demon King still has a few tricks up his sleeve.  His demon children are again causing havoc for Emma and her friends, and they are desperately trying to find the missing Black Lion.

I won't tell you anymore because to do that would be to give the story away.  Rest assured that all your old friends are there, and you will see Emma's snake in action, you may catch a glimpse of Xuan Wu's snake, the White Tiger is still an ass, and there may be one or two little surprises :P

Now, being the complete obsessive compulsive person I am about these sorts of things, I went onto Kylie Chan's website and found out that the other 2 books in the second trilogy - The Journey to Wudang, will be out mid and late 2010.  Wuhooo!

Earth to Hell (out now in Australia, April everywhere else... sorry)
Hell to Heaven (out mid 2010 in Australia)
Heaven to Wudang (out late 2010 in Australia)

There will be a final trilogy to this series, and I can't wait to see what it will be.  I'm hoping that there will still be enough of a storyline, but knowing the series so far I don't think that'll be too much of a drama.

So I'm finally over my Regency Rut, and thank you Kylie Chan for that.  I'm going to keep my eyes peeled for the rest of the series this year, oh, and there is a small prequel coming out late 2010.  It's Gold's story.  Details are on Kylie Chan's website www.kyliechan.com
